Stewarding the world we live in
Call on the animals to teach you; the birds that sail through the air are not afraid to tell you the truth. Engage the earth in conversation; it’s happy to share what it knows. Even the fish of the sea are wise enough to explain it to you. In fact, which part of creation isn’t aware, which doesn’t know the Eternal’s hand has done this?
Creator’s hand cradles the life of every creature on the face of the earth; Creator’s breath fills the nostrils of humans everywhere. Job 12: 7-10
Many native species of insects don’t migrate and need a safe spot to hibernate over the winter. Leaf litter, branches and dead stalks from perennials are all important to providing critical hibernation space for animals and insects.
Leaves sustain the natural web of life
The majority of butterflies and moths overwinter in leaf litter and bumble bees rely on leaf litter for protection from the winter elements. Spiders, snails, worms, beetles, millipedes and mites are just a few animals living in leaves – which support the bird population.
To be beneficial, a layer of leaves needs to be at least a couple of inches thick to mimic the natural ecosystem an animal needs.
To do your part to support the ecosystem, instead of raking leaves, try piling them around shrubs, perennials and trees.
