This Ash Wednesday, February 14th, 2018, from 12:30 to 1:15 pm, ministry staff at Grace Presbyterian Church will be outside offering “Ashes to Go” to our Beltline neighbours.
We welcome you to visit us on the front steps of our church building, at the corner of 15th Avenue and 9th Street SW, following our Ash Wednesday Worship Service in the Chapel (noon to 12:30 pm). The receiving of ashes will be open to everyone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ as well as those who strive to.
Ashes (a mixture of burnt palm branches and oil) will be offered by ministry staff. The ashes are placed cross-shaped on the receiver’s forehead by the leader’s thumb, accompanied by the instruction to “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Though this practice and these words may seem strange at first, they are meant as a prayerful, sombre, and ultimately peaceful reminder that even though this life is temporary, in Jesus Christ we have eternal life.
Whether you would like to join us for Ash Wednesday worship at noon in the Chapel, receive ashes on the front steps between 12:30 and 1:15 pm, or just say hello, please come visit us at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1009 15th Avenue SW, on Ash Wednesday, February 14th.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and begins the 40-day season of reflection and preparation leading up to Easter. Ash Wednesday has been practised for approximately 1500 years and continues to be observed by a wide range of Christian denominations.
