Mary and Joseph walked 111 kms from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

WHAT:

Members of the Grace church family are invited to walk during the Christian season Advent as a spiritual practice.  Walk alone or form a team to make the journey to the manger.  You will be given a booklet which will have a daily prayer or meditation for you to consider and a place to write down your steps.  From November 29 – December 24, join the advent journey to the manger.  Walk and think about Jesus born for you.

WHY:

“Walking” is mentioned 247 times in the Bible and is a metaphor for our life with God.  Pilgrimage is the practice of intentional travel to a holy place, with the hope of an encounter with God, with one’s faith tradition, or with those who have gone before us.  Pilgrimage is a centuries-old Christian practice, which involves prayerful walking as well as a sense of belonging to a community.  Walking through Advent will be a spiritual practice for you and for the Grace Community.

WHEN:

Walking begins on the first Sunday in Advent, November 27 and finishes on Christmas Eve.
Sign up will be in the Family Room following the morning services.

HOW:

You can walk by yourself and count your steps/distance.
You can walk as part of a team and combine your steps/distance.
You can walk wherever and whenever you like; you can also walk at the church – we know how many steps around the sanctuary and gym.
Each day that you walk, you can use your step count, phone apps, Fit Bits or pedometers to calculate your distance, and contemplate the meditation in the booklet.

WHO:

Anyone in the Grace Church Family from age 5 – 105
Walk as a family, walk as a couple, walk by yourself, walk with a friend, sign up on a team.
A team could be made up of a few people: perhaps one who walks a few steps a day and is a seasoned intercessor, and another person who is new to prayer and walks a lot!  All will benefit from the journey.  We will help you make up the team.
